The most beautiful natural pool in Puglia
Although the name seems to derive from the Greek term “posìa”, which refers to a source of freshwater present here in the past and then extinct, the reference to poesia has become the object of suggestive legends related to the caves, also inspired by the beauty of the site. It is said, in fact, that the clear waters of the natural pool were particularly appreciated by a beautiful princess who used to bathe there, to the point of capturing the attention of men. Among them, there were poets and singers who, enchanted by so much beauty, created magnificent verses for the girl. Clearly, this is only a popular legend but there are numerous testimonies of the presence of man throughout the site since remote times, such as ancient Messapian inscriptions (but also Greek and Latin) on the walls of the cavities.
Grotta della Poesia is located in Melendugno, specifically Roca Vecchia, a coastal town. It is part of the archaeological area of Roca, a popular destination for diving enthusiasts.
